The Charlton Life Charity Match - The Valley - May 22nd 2007

On 22nd May 2007, a collection of unfit, untalented and overweight Charlton supporters will participate in one of two charity football games at the Valley, to raise funds for Demelza House.
Demelza is a fantastic children's hospice that cares for children with life-limiting illnesses, and their families.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. Demelza, Hospice Care for Children will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

We would be delighted if you could contribute in some way towards our fundraising target. Opportunists competitions

You might get an e-mail about an exclusive one off tshirt which used an image which looks pretty darn close to the flag on Sunday, now we know nothing about, we suspect Burro and the club know nothing about it.

We do find it strange that the day after the flag made it's debut, this appears, if there is anything produced to to with the flag, it'll be produced by Burro and the club. So we're keeping our distance from the competition.

Charlton Athletic's home game on Sunday against Newcastle will also mark the latest offering from the popular 'Valley Flags' campaign. The new banner, which will begin its journey around the Valley just before kick-off, features an image of Derek 'Killer' Hales in the pose of the Cuban revolutionary, Che Guevara.

The flag, measuring 18 metres by 18 metres, printed in 8 sections, hand-stitched together and hemmed at the edges, was printed by Dave Davies at Billboard Posters/Augustus Martin, who are one of Europe's most advanced integrated screen, litho and digital printers. The company, which operates on a five-acre site in Bow, have been supplying large format print and POS material for over forty years.

"This was a great project to work on, and anything that can get the crowd going and give us that twelfth man at the moment can only be a good thing," explained Dave, a North Stand season-ticket holder.

“It was particular fun since, our premises being in East London, a fair few Hammers fans were involved in the production process. I must admit to having a couple of worried moments as the deadline approached, but they’re pros and there wasn’t any kind of sabotage,” joked Dave.

The flag, one of many more planned, will be used at all home matches until the end of the season and, if possible, one or two away games before the end of the campaign.

New News

So we've been away, and been busy, and we've got a couple or three things to announce.

1. The Derek Hales mega flag is in production in a secret location in East London, and hopefully will be coming out for a trip round the Valley for the Newcastle Game

2. A new bank account is in operation, more details on Monday, but you can now pay into Valley Flags over the counter at any Barclays, or on line.

3. We've added a special little link from Amazon, allowing you to pre order the first album, from the best thing from Greenwich since GMT, the band are called, Lucky Soul, and the album is called 'The Great Unwanted'. We think it's going to be great, Colin Murray on Radio 1 thinks it'll win the Mercury Music Award. So get there first, and pre order via Valley Flags.

Firstly thanks to all of you who have commented on the new banners which made their debuts against Everton, 99% positive, and we are hugely chuffed!

But now the begging bowl is out again, and it's Christmas time! So if you are shopping this Christmas at Amazon.co.uk, please click on the link on the site, and we get commission which goes towards a brighter Valley.

New shops will join Amazon in the next few days.

A few people have asked about T-shirts and other Valley Flags merchandise, well keep your eyes peeled for early 2007, remember Valley Flags will be the only place to buy the banner designs on T-shirts and all other goodies.

Also news that Barclays have now accepted the application for the Valley Flags own bank account, and details should be available around Christmas.

As you may or may not have seen, a number of concepts/wording for banners for the North Upper had been used and sold as t-shirts.

The Valley Flag Campaign has reached an agreement that t shirts which include VFC designs and concepts are now unavailable until further notice.

Here are the first basic designs (before they go to the suppliers art section)

The reason we're going for clear text is that the banner hopefully will be hung from the back of the North Upper, behind the last row of seats, meaning they'll be a fair bit away from people, so the simpler the design, hence the lack of fine design and pictures, making them easier to see. Hopefully they'll be a meter high, the letters are likely to be about 90cm high, using a font called 'Gill San'.

This isn't about choosing one of the designs, hopefully, all 4 designs will be used, it just to check what people think?

What do you think we need to explain, are the banner obvious enough, or will they go over peoples heads?

While we're being accused of stealing the money by some, it's time to give a little update, apologise for the lack of updates, but I've hardly had time due to work commitments.

Fundraising is slow, but work is being done behind the scenes by Ben Hayes to improve this, hopefully we'll be in a position to announce a significant funding source in the next two weeks.

Part of the problem has been around setting up a bank account for the campaign, we should hopefully sort this out in the next few days with the Halifax.

Designs, right this is over to you, we need some designs for the overhead flag, so get your pencils out and start working on them, we need two designs.

1. For a 6 x 3 vertical banner which will probably be hung from the back of the North Upper, the so the design needs to be simple, and something which can be seen from the East/West Stands.

2. For a 10 x 8 overhead banner, anything goes here as long as it's legal, is it something to do with the clubs history? or something recent?

A great week for all Charlton supporters, First Jimmy comes, then Darren and Luke re sign for the club.

So with the players coming in, it's time for supporters to help further the atmosphere at the Valley, dig deep, and put some cash into the Flags campaign.

First week news

Many thank for all of you who have donated via PayPal, or brought music via iTunes. £193.45 is an amazing start.

From next week, we'll hopefully be in a position to give banking details for the Campaign, meaning we'll be able to accept cheques, and payments over the counter at Nationwide.

This will enable more people to donate, and will save the campaign funds, at present we're paying fees to PayPal on all transactions, due to having an account which allows credit card payments

The Campaign has already made an appearance on BBC London, and hopefully more press interest will come.

Flying the Flag

Five years ago, we had a Valley of passion. It wasn't the smartest of
grounds, but it was a noisy, partisan fortress. We'd just finished ninth in our first season back in the Premiership, and our strength at The Valley helped us achieve that. We expanded the stadium as we built on that achievement. Our seventh-place finish in 2004 came after we unveiled our current, 27,000-capacity, Valley.

But now something's missing from The Valley. The Covered End choir has moved to the upper north stand, but the noise doesn't carry as well as we hoped it would. The East and West Stands have become noticeably quieter. If there's a noise at The Valley, it usually comes from the Jimmy Seed stand.

We need to make the Covered End the centre of the fans’ noise and activity again. At Middlesbrough Steve Gibson's canny enough to get the fans involved. On that fateful night in April, who could not have been impressed by that huge Boro flag?

Manchester United may be the world's biggest club, but they still give part of the Stretford End to their fans’ banners. Their banners proclaim their love for United, and tell the world about it.

The Valley Flags Campaign

The Valley has so many stories to tell; the wizardry of Derek Hales;
Colin Walsh's goal which won the first game back home; Clive Mendonca's play-off hat-trick; the only south London club to have got into to and stayed in the Premiership.

This is where the Valley Flags Campaign comes in. Let us demonstrate our history, heritage and pride in Charlton and pass that story onto the next generation of fans, the ones we want to fill an even bigger Valley. And to pass it on to our new manager and players, the men who will take us into the future on the pitch.

One of the proposals made by a number of the candidates during the recent Supporters’ Director’s election was the replacement of the large, overhead flag and the introduction of slogan banners on the balcony in front of the North Upper.

Now that idea has become a campaign with setting up of a website http://www.valleyflags.co.uk

Fans can already make contributions via the website or through Amazon purchases and music downloads via the iTunes music store

The Flags

A10m x 8m flag of the Derek Hales/Che Guevara image designed by Burro. Burro have given us permission to use the image and this flag could also be taken to away games. Approx cost would be £2,000

long slogan banners for display across the front of the north upper Balcony. This would be similar to the slogans displayed so effectively at Old Trafford but would require permission of Llanera and Joma and this is being looked into. A set of different slogan banners would cost around £3,500

Another idea is for a massive replica of the new Joma shirt, the final price to be decided when we have a firm idea on size and possibly design.

Other issues such as health and safety and storage have already been discussed with the General Manager and the club’s Safety Officer. Banners would be made of fire resistant material and would be stored away from the Valley on non-match days. During games members of the campaign would liaise with the club’s staff to ensure that flags were stored safely and did not cause any form of hazard.

So what can you do?

• Spread the word among other fans via e-mail and websites/message board.

• Carry links to Valley Flags on your website/blog or e-mails

• Lobby any fans groups or supporters’ club branches you belong to or just get your mates to chip in.

• Donate yourself via the website.

• Log on via the website to download iTunes and buy from Amazon and get everyone else you know to do the same. 4% of the sale price will go to the campaign.

• If you own or know a Charlton supporting business ask them for a donation

• Offer to help out on matchdays with displaying, moving and storing the banners. We need people to unfurl and then fold up and store the flags

• Help design the flags yourself if you have the creative and IT skills.

So here we go, and lets make the Valley the stadium it was.
